Shift tube - is it needed?

I have installed a Hurst 3 speed floor shift in order to get away from the column shifter. I am now going to rebuild/refurbish the steering column. I would like to ditch the shift tube, shift levers and all other non necessary parts. Will this work?? Do I need all the internal shifter parts in order...

Probably already done this job...if not...there are backing plates on the inside of the door post. They should be loose for adjustment, but they rust to the door post over time. Thanks for the info, appreciate it. I should look before I leap into forum. Tub spreading and tailgate won't close

The sides of the tub are spreading outwards causing large gaps at both sides at the top of the tailgate. The tailgate is having troubles opening/closing due to this.
