GT40P headers

Post by Cstrom » Wed Jan 11, 2017 10:40 pm

I have a shot at picking up a fairly low mileage 5.0 from an 98 Mountaineer for my 74'. Of course the gt40p has the goofy exhaust ports and needs special headers. I'm also going to swap out my C4 for an AX15 soon as well. Anyone have a similar setup? What headers did you use and did you have better luck with a hydraulic ,cable style clutch or installing the factory manual clutch linkage?

As far as I know from current feedback, the best fitting for the P heads is the Bronco Hut header made by Sanderson. It's specifically oriented for the P heads, but will still fit the standards as well.
Our headers (as well as most) will "fit" the P heads, but you're still going to have that issue with two of the plugs and their wires. Some run them and just put up with it, but if you want less trouble in that department, the Sandersons are the way to go.

Good luck.

Thanks! I tried Sanderson's website. Maybe it's just my phone but would only bring up small block Chevy headers...

Is there a specific model number I could search for and will they work with an AX15?

I'm working on driveability first for my 74 I recently acquired. I see you work at Wild Horses, I might do your AX15 kit before I mess with swapping engines. This 302 starts and runs decent but the carb is dirty (had sat for 12 years) I have a brand new intake and Fitech going on it in a few weeks oncell I move into my new place.

Is your AX15 the same one that's behind the Coyote in the ICON Broncos?
At some point in time I'll either swap a 351 or Coyote. Just want to make sure my new trans is up to snuff with my future motor. I have read a lot about older/ Jeep AX15s that don't hold up behind the Jeep 6cyl. Mine will see mostly street use, fishing and camping with a 3.5 lift. No rock crawling and would never run bigger than a 33" Tire.

I used Sanderson heads through Bronco Hut. Call the Hut and they will set you up!
