Lockers

Anybody have a locker recommendations? I've heard good things about Aussie Lockers.

I think they all have good and bad aspects from what you hear. Depends on the owner/operator and sometimes other physical things with the Bronco as well.
I'm probably a good example, since I would not have touched a Detroit for my own applications (just didn't need the aggressive lockup) and would normally choose a Trutrac from the same company. Great all around setup, but is a Limited-Slip and not a full locker.
But the '68 I picked up earlier this year has Detroits in the front and rear, and while i can definitely feel them, they're not obnoxious. Of course, a buddy had Detroit in his very lifted, very big-tired '75 and it was quite literally undrivable and unsafe on the street until he replaced the rear with a Truetrac.

Aussie Lockers are in the "lunchbox locker" category so are less expensive, easier to install (most of the time) and should prove to be pretty durable. But are going to have the same characteristics as any gear/dog-tooth type locker. Your results may vary, but at those prices they're worth a try I'd think.
You thinking of the rear only? Front only, or both?
If there is one acknowledged weak link to this type it's the original open carrier that they use as a base. But because I've seen plenty of Detroits shatter the outer cases under hard use, I'm not sure just how much of a detractor the stock case really is.

How do you intend to use it? You kind of hard on the equipment when you're having fun? Bigger tires?
One thing to do for sure though, is if you're talking about the rear end, you MUST upgrade to the 31 spline version and change the axles if you have not already. Not that you can't run 28's of course. But if you plan to do any hard work with them the 28's don't like the harsher inputs of a locker and will snap off the splined ends much easier than a 31 spline high-strength shaft.

Oh, and if your Bronco has any little finicky handling aspect on the street, I'd say a locker in the rear is going to showcase those characteristics even more. Kind of a magnifying glass for faults.

To be honest, I have no complaints regarding my bronco's street handling. I think it handles darn good for a 44 year old truck. I don't do any extreme four wheeling, because I can't afford to fix, nor do I want to put dents in it. It's in good shape, but not cherry by any means. The tires are just 31s.

I'm still on the fence regarding the whole idea. I only brought up Aussie Lockers because I know I guy who has them on his jeep. He seems to think they work fine for what we do...mainly trail running with a few hills here and there along the way.

I ran a Detroit for several years and hated it overall. The slop annoyed me all the time and the clunky locking/unlocking sucked on pavement, it was really bad when towing. Off road it worked well but not being able to unlock it on side hills was not fun. I now run a ARB in the rear and a TracLock in the front. I love the ARB as the street manners are great and I can drive in snow and ice and it feels much safer.

I run Detroit TruTracs since I mainly street drive mine. I'm really happy with em for my needs . Install and forget and less money than " selectables".

Thanks for all the responses. The TruTrac sounds about what I'm looking for. Did you have to upgrade your spline or axle for this? Also, do you run the TruTrac on both axles, or just front/rear?

This also sounds similar to Aussie Lockers...true or false?

I'm not familiar with how the Aussie Lockers work so I can't say if they're similar or not. The Trutrac uses Planetary gears and transfers the power to the tire with the MOST resistance. I'm running them on both Broncos
I kept the 28 spline axles on the '68 but went with 31 spline on the '76. I'm not sure if you can still get the Trutrac for a D-44 I've heard yes and no. If I ever tear into the front of the '76 I'll put a Trutrac in if they're still available. The PO of my '68 installed a Power trax ? or something the more it spins the tighter it locks . I'll keep that as it has worked for my purpose so far.

The Truetrac is a limited-slip, and the Aussie is a locker. Two different beasts in function, and completely different in design.
The only thing that would normally be considered similar to a Truetrac is a Gleason/Torsen differential. But even they're still different from one another.

Don't be fooled by the name "Detroit" in the phrasing. The Detroit Locker (a locker, obviously) and the Truetrac are just made by the same company. Now owned by Eaton I believe, unless they've been sold again.

As far as upgrading the axle shafts, I think you can still get 28 spline Truetracs to work with your stock axles, but frankly I would use this as the main excuse to go with 31 splines in the first place. Yes, it adds to the not insubstantial cost of the diff upgrade, but in the long-run it's worth it.
If you never plan to wheel at all, or much, then 28 spline axles are probably fine with this limited slip. But even those can put more stresses on the axle shafts if used hard. Hence the usual recommendation.
I'm pretty sure you can't even buy a 28 spline Detroit Locker, or ARB Locker anymore. But the Truetrac might still be. Just haven't checked in awhile. I'm going with one in my '71, but already have the upgraded axle shafts.

There's an older Truetrac for sale on Craigslist right now for a 44 I think Stan. Think I saw one for a 30 as well, but I'll see if I can find the link for the 44.

My rig has a Detroit TrueTrac in the rear. I'm very happy with this setup.
