I just switched to an Auto from the 3 spd Rat. So far I am pleased. I will miss the ability to "rock" in and out of 1st and Rev to get out of a mud hole.

They are all good. I just happen to have a C-4 that came with mine, but me the buyer chose it that way. Anyone runnin a ZF 5-sp, My hat's off to them. :D BH

I a mnot sure yet. I have had a NP435 for the last 10 years and like the granny when offroad. However I drive it daily and recently bought a C4 & Dana 20 out of a 73 bronco. It's sitting in my back yard now. Difficult decision to make.

I ran the stock C4 for a long time, then I went to the T/C 4 speed with overdrive. That was a bad idea. I had that box for 3 years and rebuilt it twice. I then went to the NV4500. I love that transmission. I will say that I would not have switched from the C4 had it come with overdrive, and I heard way too many horror stories to go to the AOD. After running the NV4500 I am now a converted granny gear man too. It makes negotiating obstacles a lot smoother. I did love that C4 though. That was a sweet juicebox. Overall I have to say manual, but I won't knock the automatic.
Love that 'drove 'round your Blazer the hard way to pull you out' feeling.

Let's look at this for longevity. I want to drive it 'til I die. How many geriatrics have manuals? I believe the auto is superior for the Bronco lifer.

Well my first EB was a c-4 untill I swaped it out for a np435 :D then I my next EB ended up with a nv4500 mated to an atlasII and I thought it was the bomb. Now that I have driven it for a few years and am getting board I have started my plans for the next generation of EB's (tube frame truggies) and yep it get's the manual VB w/compresion braking built into a stought c-5 and the atlas behind it. :twisted: :twisted: This will be my final swap for I have had it all and time to build my all out rig for trail, comp, beer runs and pleasure!

I had a C4 rebuilt w/ low stall converter, shift kit, etc, and it worked good but i had a 79 bronco that i swapped a 435 into and it had more control, so I ditched the C4 for a 435 in my 76, and up next will be a ZF :D

MANUAL!!!

I must say drop it low with the atlass in low and 118 to 1 is great. One better is poppin the nv4500 in 5th on the freeway and cruisen 80 with 4.88's and 37's is just about unbeatable at 2300rpm's !

ive wheeled with both and i really prefer the auto. one less thing to concentrate on in off balance situations . plus my wife can drive it without to much difficulty

Having run both I can vote with a good conscience. I say auto due to the terrain I drive. A manual has its strong points but you can't beat an auto when you need to get moving on a steep incline in an off camber situation. It sure beats the smell of roasted clutch when you need to jockey 3 pedals in a situation where one slip will send you rolling over a bank. Even with a brake lock this can get quite interesting. I literally remember using my hand to push the accelerator while simultaneously letting out the clutch and brake pedals to get moving.

There are only two points where a manual has the edge. 1: They usually have a lower 1st or granny gear. (This I will eventually correct by using dual T-Cases) 2: If the engine dies going down a hill a manual will maintain engine compression to slow down. (I already fixed this by converting to EFI so it doesn't die on the hills)

With this in mind the only way I would run a manual is if I ran the ZF to get the best of both highway and off road gearing in one package and would only do so if I had a line lock for the brakes for hairy situations.

Since the cost is comparable I think I'll just add another T-Case and keep my auto.

Does anyone running an auto have any fluid starvation problems when the front of your E.B. is pointing at the sky?
If so what solutions did you come up with to over come this?
I seem to loose alot of fluid out the vent in this position a catch can would catch the fluid but my ATF fluid level would still drop sometimes below the pick up and I loose gear or start to slip backward.
Has anyone modified there pick up to always be in the fluid, possible a weighted flexable tube that can fall to the lowest point in the pan where fluid would be?
Any ideas ?

I haven't noticed any problem when pointing skyward. You can add a vent line to the tranny vent hole to get it in a position where it is less likely to spill over. I haven't checked to see if there is a line on mine yet so I do not know what difference it might make. (Since I haven't seen one I am inclined to think it does not have one) As to slipping I have an extra quart of fluid running in an external fluid (oil) filter (I.E. A Remote Oil Filter Setup is added in the tranny line) that is positioned in the area underneath behind the passenger seat. (There is a small pocket there that is fairly well protected) This alone may make a big difference since it adds extra fluid to the system and may explain why it isn't an issue for me.
