1977 bronco when i turn key to run position the distributor starts to click

i can remove the coil wire going to the distributor an the wire will arch .Cranks and runs but when you get up to 2500rpm the engine starts to shutter.Can unplug the breakless ignition modulator and the distr does not click when i turn the key to run position . thinking it might be a bad modulator thanks for any help is their any way to check the modulator.

Hey Jim, welcome. Did you get this figured out yet?

Hard to test modules, but I'm pretty sure it's possible. An arc between the distributor and coil doesn't sound right though, for an engine that's not running.
I'll see if I can find any reference guides on troubleshooting an Duraspark setup, but let us know if you figured it out.

Cool. Love the simple fixes.
That's why we used to always carry a spare with is if we off-roaded. Not a huge concern around town, but you didn't want to get caught without one in the outback.
Not that they're unreliable. There are some originals still working out there. But anything that will ruin your day if it fails is good to have handy. And since electronic is definitely better than points, you just gotta stick with it.

Also plenty of threads here and elsewhere on the internet showing how to utilize other brands (like GM HEI modules) in place of the Ford, simply to have a smaller spare that more easily fits in the glovebox.
In case you're leaning in that direction.
