Erratic Headlights

Post by Kitster » Tue Sep 03, 2002 7:46 am

I recently bought a '73 Bronco. On my first night ride, after about 45 minutes, the headlights started flickering off and on. I would pull to the side of the road and turn the headlights off for about one minute. After turning the headlights back on they would stay on for about a mile or two, then start flickering again. All the other lights seem to operate normally. Any ideas?

If I remember right....

You have 3 things (other then the battery and fuse) in the circuit. The Grounds (1 at each head light I think is it), the Hi/low switch, and the light switch.

If it does it for both high and low beams, it may be the light switch. However, these rigs have a history of Very Old (never replaced) Hi/low switches. I'd check that.

Electrons are tricky, though. It could be a few other things.

Light switch, it has a thermal overload that wears out over time
