Fan belt question

Post by Puff Daddy » Wed Jan 15, 2014 4:39 pm

So, I've finally got around to doing that power steering upgrade I've been taking about for the last 10 years. I'm just getting everything put back on, and I noticed that the fan belt that connects to the alternator his too big, and I can't figure out why. I got extra fan belts for the power steering set up, and they are even bigger.

Quite baffling, because it fit fine before I started. Clearly I'm missing something...or is it just as simple as I need to buy a smaller belt?

Are you talking about width or length?
New pullies other than the p/s pulley?

There are definitely different widths of belts. Even the supposedly appropriate ones are not always exact. Although those that are just one size off will usually fit just fine, albeit a bit proud of the pulley groove.
See it all the time with our pulleys as they are designed around the narrower of the available belts.
And some years the stock power steering belts were absolute monsters! At least when compared to the other stuff.

If your narrow belts fit just down into the groove, I'd say you're good to go.
If your wider belts just pop up above the line of the pulley (about 1/16" or so proud), I'd say you're good to go.
If they're off by more than that, best to check with your auto parts store to get the appropriate size.
If it's the length that's different, either find out why and fix it, or just figure out what length you need and swap 'em out for the right ones. I've received the wrong belts for Broncos (length-wise that is) even when just buying a stock replacement for a stock 1-belt Bronco!

Good luck.

:) Looks like you've been cruising " Classics" again.
Wondering the same things as dirtdonk. Exactly how/what did you up upgrade?

I upgraded to the WH 4 bolt quick ratio kit. Width wise, the belt fits fine. Length wise, I have the alternator all the way extended to the end of the adjustment bracket, and the belt is still loose. It's weird because it fit when I took it off. The pulley's appear to be the same circumference. I guess I'll just take it in to the parts store and tell them I want a smaller size.

Did you go with WHs double groove hardened pulleys? I believe the crank pulley is a little smaller than stock - and it doesn't take much to make the belt too short.

I'd have to agree with that, even though our design is patterned exactly after stock pullies! What happens I'm sure is, there were probably a couple of variations over the years and whichever one was chosen as the model was not the one you had. Oops...
They're the same diameter as the ones on my '71, and the last ones I checked them against.

Sorry about the hassle.
But, as we like to say in this business: "Well sir, that's the first time I've ever seen that! It's a mystery..."

Even when it's true, it still sounds fishy, even to us, coming from our end.
