I want to change out a leaking axle seal I have everything off and starring @ the axle and have tried a hammer on the backside, won't budge. I do have detroit lockers front and back, do they need bled to release pressure? any thoughts?? thanks

I guess you're talking rear axle. Did you remove the 4 nuts holding the retainer on? Sometimes the axles stick and you almost need a slide hammer to get them free. If you have an old wheel or maybe the brake drum you can put that on and loosely attach a couple lugs nuts and use it like a slide hammer.

Another method is to use a heavy chain or "log chain". Attached one end of the chain to a lug nut on the axle. Lay the chain out from the vehicle in a straight line with the axle. Grab the other end of the chain and gently roll the chain up...as if you were cracking a whip. The chain will pop the axle loose.

And in case you haven't gotten it out yet, some penetrating oil around the circumference of the bearing might help. They're not always rusted in, but can sometimes be stuck in simply by the semi-dried and very sticky old gear lube and grease.
Can't hurt anyway.

Good luck.

Paul

use a slide hammer , they actually make a special flange to fit on the lug studs, then the slide hammer will knock er on out ...
