Shift tube - is it needed?

Shift tube - is it needed?

I have installed a Hurst 3 speed floor shift in order to get away from the column shifter. I am now going to rebuild/refurbish the steering column. I would like to ditch the shift tube, shift levers and all other non necessary parts. Will this work?? Do I need all the internal shifter parts in order for the steering column to work safely? Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

Not really sure about the tube but a lot of people remove the collar and replace it with a "solid billet " collar that doesn't have the " shifter ' connection point.
Removing the shift levers shouldn't be a problem either.
